Link to Chris Steven Biography

Not used to writing bio’s, I`m taking my life in my hands / diving in at the deep end / using one of my nine lives (thinks he`s a cat this one!!). Talking of cats….the one that shares my house is called `Mittens`. She`s black with white paws (hence the name).

Anyway, I digress (they don`t call me little Ronnie for nothing – haha!)

Music (ah yes……)

It seems like yesterday, but 40 years ago (yes – you read it right) I was at school doing my CSE`s as it was back then. A guy brought along an acoustic guitar to while away the time between exams and I thought…I like that! I think I was hooked from that point on.

After school I tried to join the RAF, but it didn`t work out. Probably just as well !

With school over and with starting my first job, I bought MY first guitar. It wasn`t expensive but it was the beginning. Countless (but very basic – I`m talking the three chord trick here) country songs later, I was making some headway. I was also doing a bit of home recording at the time – you know – just to check back on the noise I was making. I`d sit there, in my room, playing away (headphones on probably), when in would pop my brother and make the loudest, blood-curdling yell I ever heard. Well, I can`t tell you what I said, but it must have sounded something like Aaaaarrrhhhhh!!!!! Needless to say, it was back to the beginning AGAIN! Little siblings can be very frustrating sometimes.

I lived in Leicester at the time and after several visits to see `The Shadows` in concert at the De Montfort hall, I was inspired to play instrumentals like my idol Hank Marvin. So, the next guitar was in the pipeline but I wasn`t ready yet. The next was a twelve-string acoustic which, being under such tension from the strings, eventually went out of true and had to be scrapped. It was hard on the fingers anyway, despite having a great sound.

– Chris playing Shadows

A bit of classical music tuition somewhere along the way improved my reading of music, so learning the `Shadows` improved when I got my first electric guitar (which I still have) – a trusty white Marlin Sidewinder – anyone remember those? It`s still going strong after all that time. You can see it in the picture above. The Carlsbro Scorpion lead amp, though basic by today`s standards, gave me, what I thought, was the elusive `sound` – it wasn`t !!! Trying to get `the sound` I guess made me have to adapt playing technique, but it still wasn`t there! I still have the Scorpion and it still works.

With the advent of parenthood, my attention was required with the usual, so any time playing music when it could be fitted in, was great! I began to write poetry and had some published. Recent forays into songwriting produced some interesting ideas, which have yet to be realised. One day………

And so, ladies and gentlemen, fans, agents, aunts, uncles, family, friends and the cat…we reach more or less up-to-date. Almost.  Two years ago, I was fortunate, by way of my eldest daughter (thanks Megs), to be introduced to my now singing partner, Lahna Raven. I`ll spare you most of the details, only to say that, as a result, we now perform together as ROCKSOLID duo, performing in clubs and working on our new tribute show….to Cher and Roy Orbison.

And what of `the sound`? I haven`t forgotten!! After all that time, I have finally realised my dream (thanks Hank). If you get a chance, listen to a sample on this website and judge for yourself. I got there, but it was a hell of a journey. Nothing is ever `good enough` until you know, in your heart of hearts, that you`ve achieved what you set out to do. You know what I mean?

So,currently working the club circuit with my partner Lahna Raven, I get to do what I`ve always wanted to do.

If you get to where I`m/we are playing anytime, you`ll see that I don`t just stand there, sing and play guitar….I interact with my audience. Audience participation is almost compulsory for parts of my performance, although I never make a fool of anyone!  The audience gets 110%.

Its been said I`m a showman and I guess that pretty well sums me up. Why shouldn`t I be? It`s about the audience having a great time and me doing what I always wanted to do. I guess if I’d gone into acting, I would be the same, though I think comedy would have been my forte.

I hope this inspires other up-and-coming musicians to keep going, whatever the obstacle, to realise their DREAM !!

Other than music, I watch TV (when I can). I like action movies, documentaries (mainly archeological and scientific). I`m not into sport but I AM competitive…VERY competitive.

I once tried fencing, but the man at the garden center said I put it up the wrong way !!! No, seriously, fencing of the sword type! I`ve done TAI CHI CHUAN and flown a single-engined aircraft (well, for half an hour anyway!) and not forgetting my poetry, the anthologies were available in all good bookshops at the time.

Anyway, I must give thanks to all who have helped (technical or otherwise), coerced, dragged, beat me up, shouted, ranted and raved, blackmailed and promised, fed and chauffeured, but especially to those closest to my heart… my family old and new (they know who I mean).

So, its goodnight from me and him (and Mittens).Meouwww.
